Engels remembers how Monty Sewell, who once played with Louie Armstrong, helped found the band back in 1973. Engels said that Sewell owned a music store where Blooms & Things is now located.

The Salish Sea Early Music Festival offers a rare opportunity to hear the complete Musical Offering and other chamber music by Johann Sebastian Bach on period instruments with German harpsichordist Hans-Jürgen Schnoor, baroque violinist Ingrid Matthews and baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan in Bach’s Musical Offering on Monday, April 18 at 7:00 PM at Bethel Church at 148th Ave SW & 119th Street (14736 SW Bethel Lane) on Vashon Island.

The Vashon Beethoven Quartet Project continues on April 17th with the Quartet op.18 no.5 in A major. The Girsky Quartet performs this fifth of the early Beethoven quartets along with the charming Mozart Bb quartet K. 589. Join Artur Girsky, Natasha Bazhanov, Joseph Gottesman and Rowena Hammill as they continue this highly popular series.

The Hardware Store Restaurant decided to start having a regular live music night a couple of years back and it has turned out to be a lot of fun and a great venue to hear some really talented people perform.

The music takes place from 7-9pm.

This month, on March 24th, we bring you local musician Loren Sinner.  We love having Loren perform at the Hardware Store - it’s a good fit for the room and everyone really enjoys his selection of music.

Birch Pereira and the Gin Joints is a project that dips into the music from the golden era of jazz, country and rock n’ roll from the 30s through the early 60s. With upright bassist Birch Pereira and his classic crooner inspired vocals at the center, the group features some of Seattle’s best musicians in a variety of instrumentations as the repertoire moves from romantic ballads to jumping swing and two steps, drawing from the repertoire of Hoagy Carmichael, Bing Crosby, Chet Baker and Fats Waller to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Little Walter and Elvis.

One hundred years after the birth of French cabaret singer Edith Piaf, local artist and musician Azula Phillips is paying her tribute on Vashon. Phillips says she first discovered Piaf while studying and performing in France in 1992, and in a subsequent visit years later she happened into a gathering on the anniversary of the singer’s death.

Ben Hunter and Joe Seamons formed their blues duo in 2012 after performing together for two years with Renegade Stringband. The music Hunter and Seamons play is truly American––inspired by early 20th century American folk and African music.

Hunter, born in the African nation of Lesotho, raised in Phoenix, Arizona, is a classically trained violinist who studied music around the world. Seamons has shown a devotion to Northwest American folk music, receiving a Woody Guthrie Fellowship from the BMI Foundation and he studied the banjo with Hobe Kytr.

Both Gus and Camille are prolific songwriters who carry the torch of American music by performing classic and original numbers with the acoustic sounds of soul, country, blues, and folk. Islanders Daryl Redeker and Sam and Sara Van Fleet, known as Van Redeker, think hard about how to put energy into a crowd. Redeker, who teaches guitar, speaks fondly of the band’s beginnings. “It was spooky how easy it was to talk without worrying what to say,” says the lead guitarist.

Angelo Rondello is a powerfully expressive pianist whose career has brought him across the United States and the globe, playing locally with Bainbridge Symphony and Lake Union Civic Orchestra. Brittany Boulding has appeared as a soloist with the Northwest Sinfonietta, Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra and internationally.
