After a five-year break from his studio, Vashon astrologer and artist Frederick Woodruff will unveil 16 new paintings and collages at his upcoming show at the Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union on Friday September 7.

Woodruff notes that his approach to these new paintings was influenced by The New York School: A raucous phase in art history when the abstract expressionists remade the process of painting in an outrageous way.

Darsie Beck, watercolorist, author and sculptor, has a full plate for the next few months presenting workshops on Vashon, in Port Townsend and for Rick Steves in Edmonds. Beck is best known for his incredible travel journals that combine watercolors of the places he visits along with small narratives or quote. The journals that he has created over the years now number over 39 volumes and delight students and his many workshops.

Never before publicly displayed, Vashon Island resident, Jean Navarre has entrusted Janett Harrington and Andrea Aldrich, co-owners of UpCycled, with the privilege of presenting for sale twenty-two carefully selected pieces of art, representing eight contemporary artists.

This Spring, eighty-five 4th grade students at Chautauqua Elementary School have been studying the birds of Vashon-Maury Island with the help of volunteers from Vashon Audubon. This program has been conducted at Vashon elementary schools for more than twenty years.

The Spring 2012 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour will be held on two weekends, May 5th-6th and 12th-13th, 10-5 each day. It’s a free, self-guided event with 20 participating studios.

The Holiday 2011 Vashon Island Art Studio Tour will be held on two weekends, December 3rd and 4th and 10th and 11th, 10-4 each day. It’s a free, self-guided event with over 40 participating studios. Follow the numbers designated on the Studio Tour map which is available online at www.VashonIslandArtStudioTour.com and at most island businesses. There are many studios to visit, a few of which are profiled below.

VAA pays homage to Hollywood for this year’s art auction when over 130 pieces of art star in the 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 2, free blockbuster preview party. Nosh on marvelous morsels in a Taste of Vashon, rub elbows with famous Island artists and view all the art in the Island’s biggest annual gallery opening.

Tickets are available now for Vashon Allied Arts’ 2011-2012 Arts & Humanities Series, a five-event, 7 p.m., Sunday evening series, held at Blue Heron Art Center. Designed to spark the imagination and enhance understanding and appreciation of our cultural landscape, the first of five events will take place November 13,with Portland filmmaker Joanna Priestley.

Vashon Allied Arts invites Vashon Island and Northwest artists to submit art in any medium for Blue Heron Gallery 2012 monthly gallery exhibitions. VAA exhibits comprise two to three artists or group shows with occasional solo exhibits in a wide range of mediums and subject matter. Group exhibits with guest curators are welcome.

We are in a time of change. Oil is running out, and increasingly our quest for oil damages the environment. Everytime I go to the grocery store, the prices are higher. The climate is changing. Old ways of doing business don’t always work anymore, and the traditional way of putting profit first has damaged our environment, our culture, and now our economy.

The 2011-2012 season includes A Christmas Carol, Sherlock’s Veiled Secret, and Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance. Drama Dock’s Youth Theater Initiative will present Godspell and All-Night Strut.

Vashon Allied Arts’ annual Art Auction celebrates the glamour of classic Hollywood, 5:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24. Mingle with stars, sip on fabulous cocktails, discover rising new artists and nosh on marvelous morsels!

Claire Green, Island artist will have a solo show at Vashon Presbyterian Church during Strawberry Festival. Hours will be 9am-5pm Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.

Garden Tour is almost here! Vashon Allied Art’s 21st annual Garden tour takes place this weekend, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26. Since tickets are valid for both days, you’ll have plenty of time to savor the details of six totally different private Island gardens.
