VYFS Announces New FESS Management Team

Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS) is pleased to announce the hiring of a team of managers to lead its early childhood program, Family Education and Support Services (FESS).  Barbara Garrett and Christine Wood joined VYFS as co-leaders of the FESS program in early October, taking over from the previous Manager, Catherina Willard.

Garrett is a licensed mental health counselor and former elementary school teacher who served as Director of Mental Health Services at Full Life Care, a nonprofit serving adults with disabilities in King and Snohomish Counties. Garrett’s title is Director of FESS. She will focus on strategic leadership, fundraising and grant writing, and program development.

Christine Wood is a certified Integral Coach with additional training and experience in parent coaching. She also has a private parent coaching practice on-Island that she will continue. Wood’s title is FESS Program Manager. She will focus on day-to-day staff management, marketing and outreach, direct services and program operations.

Both Garrett and Wood worked for VYFS previously. Garrett has served as a staff counselor and currently serves as a clinical supervisor in the Behavioral Health program at VYFS. She will continue in that roll. Wood is finishing her work as administrative assistant for the Behavioral Health program. The job-share structure provides 40 hours total between the two staff members. Garrett plans to work 15 hours and Wood will work 25 hours.

The use of the job-share structure is new to VYFS. “We haven’t done this before but we had two extraordinary candidates with strong interests in separate parts of the job description, and neither wanted full-time work” said Kathleen Barry Johnson, Executive Director of VYFS. “The two of them have previously worked together in our Behavioral Health program and we know they are an excellent team.”

VYFS’ Family Education and Support Services operates the Playspace. Children from pre-natal to 5, and their adults, can come by to check out our Open Gym daily at 1 p.m., twice-weekly Play N Chat groups, educational resources and other parent support options.
